Information for Presenters

With one exception, all conference events are taking place in the Anthropology and Sociology Building on the UBC main campus in Vancouver. Enter the building through the main front wooden doors, and you will immediately see the registration table in the hallway. The one exception is the keynote speech with Dr. Yongming Zhou on Saturday afternoon from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. This is taking place at the Michael Ames Theatre at the Museum of Anthropology. This is located directly next door to the Anthropology and Sociology Building (Map). Your conference name badge will be required to enter the museum without paying admission.

Registration will be available beginning at 6:30 pm on Friday night and beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday morning. Your $15 registration fee is payable when you check in at the registration table. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we can only take cash! Same-day registration (in case anyone comes along with you) is $20.

Please refer to the programme and timetable to see with which panel you are scheduled to speak and what time it will take place. Panels will be composed of three to four presenters. Each presentation will be 15 minutes maximum, and due to a tight schedule, session moderators will have to enforce this strictly. Each session will also feature a 30 minute discussion time at the end with a faculty discussant.

Please check in with your session chair in the room of your presentation 15 minutes in advance of the session start time in order to load your PowerPoint (if you have one) onto the room's computer or to verify that the room's multimedia system will connect to your personal laptop. If you plan on connecting your Mac, please bring the appropriate adapter. The easiest option is probably just to bring your presentation on a USB drive so we can copy it to the room's computer.

Welcome Reception / Film Panel

Friday night we will hold a welcome reception in the Anthropology and Sociology Building starting at 6:30 pm. At 7:30 pm we will have a welcome ceremony, and immediately following that we will hold our special film and performance panel. See the program for the abstracts for the films and performance piece.

On Saturday night at 7:00 pm we will hold our conference banquet at the Boathouse restaurant in Kitsilano. The cost is only $20 per person, payable at the registration table. Space is limited, so register yourself and your guests in advance if you can, although we will have same-day registration if space permits. Please come to dinner, mingle with your fellow conference-goers, relax and enjoy some socializing and drinks. The restaurant is only a short distance away, and local students will help those from out of the area navigate there on Vancouver's excellent public transit system. Check out the menu.

Silent Auction

Throughout the conference we will have a silent auction taking place adjacent to the registration, so please don't forget to drop by and check out the items we have to bid on! The auction will close on Saturday afternoon; sorry, but it's also cash only.

Keynote Speaker

Finally, our keynote speaker is Dr. Yongming Zhou of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He will deliver a talk entitled "Cultural Resilience: Religious Life of the Chinese in Prato, Italy." Please see the program for the abstract of his talk. The keynote address is open to everyone attending the conference and will take place on Saturday afternoon from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm in the Michael Ames Theatre of the Museum of Anthropology. Don't forget your name badge for admittance to the museum!
